CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES AND
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
The Acadia Parish School Board shall be committed to providing for each of its schools a program of co-curricular activities and extracurricular activities to all students in a manner which allows students equal opportunity to participate in services and activities. All activities shall be in compliance with pertinent regulations of the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE).
CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Students may participate in those activities that are relevant, supportive, and are an integral part of the structured program of studies and which are under the supervision and/or coordination of the school instructional staff. Such co-curricular activities may include: field trips, festivals, conventions, assemblies, and organizations (science clubs, student councils) and others directly related to programs of study.
Co-curricular activities may be scheduled during instructional time with an opportunity to make-up any classroom work missed as a result of the activity.
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Extracurricular activities are those activities which are not directly related to the program of studies, but are under the supervision of school instructional staff and are considered valuable for the overall development of the student. Activities not directly related to programs of study may include: field trips (entertainment in nature), assemblies (pep rallies, beauty contests), and organizational activities (athletic teams, cheerleaders, pep squads).
Extracurricular activities shall not be scheduled during instructional time.
Eligibility Requirements for Extracurricular Activities:
No student shall be allowed to participate in any event on the day or night while the student is under suspension from school.
All work missed by students while on extracurricular events must be made up and completed in a manner that would be required of any other students.
Nothing in this policy is intended to limit a teacher’s authority to require a pupil to leave a particular extracurricular activity when the teacher has evidence that the pupil’s behavior has been in violation of Board policies or school rules regarding pupil conduct. A report of misconduct of such a pupil and the action taken by the teacher shall be reported to the appropriate school administrator at the earliest possible opportunity, preferably not later than the beginning of the next school day.
Special Education Student Participation
All non-academic and extracurricular services and activities shall be offered to each exceptional child in a way which allows equal opportunity to participate in such services and activities.
Band Participation in Parish Festivals
The high schools shall arrange football schedules so that no home games are played on the Friday night of the International Rice Festival weekend unless authorized by the Superintendent, and that all marching bands participate in the International Rice Festival parade held on Saturday, in the Rayne Frog Festival parade, and when possible, the International Rice Festival parade held on Friday. Festival associations will be requested to pay expenses incurred by bands for participation in these parades. If the monetary obligation is not met, bands will not be obligated to attend.
