LEAVE WITHOUT PAY

The Acadia Parish School Board may grant leave of absence without pay for periods not exceeding one (1) year, to any regularly employed teacher or other employee who requests such leave in writing, whenever in the discretion of the Board such leave is in the best interest of the school system.  The Acadia Parish School Board may authorize leaves of absence without pay, when properly requested, according to the following:

  1. The request for leave without pay shall be submitted in writing to the Superintendent or his/her designee, at least fifteen (15) days prior to the effective date of the leave, whenever possible.  The leave request shall be presented to the School Board for its consideration.

  2. Leaves without pay shall only be granted by the School Board for the following reasons:

    1. Serious, prolonged personal or immediate family illness as verified by a physician.  Immediate family is defined as all members found under the emergencies section of the School Board’s sick leave policy (GBRIB, Sick Leave).  Care for a family member must be verified by a physician.

    2. Professional growth may be a valid reason for a leave without pay provided the employee has at least three (3) consecutive years of experience with the Acadia Parish School Board immediately preceding the request.  Individuals must provide documentation for time spent during this leave period according to the same provisions as sabbatical leave for professional or cultural improvement.

    3. The Acadia Parish School Board reserves the right to rule on any situation not covered above.  Leave without pay shall be viewed as a necessity under the above enumerated circumstances.  The Acadia Parish School Board shall base its decision on the employee’s need for leave without pay and the continuity necessary to fulfill its educational mission.

  1. Leave without pay, if granted, shall be for a maximum period of one (1) school year.

  2. Leave without pay cannot be used to acquire tenure; however, if the employee has already acquired tenure, such leave does not affect the acquired tenure rights.

  3. Employees granted leave without pay must return to the employ of the Acadia Parish School Board unless released by the School Board from such obligation.
